FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Here we've gathered the answers to everything we get asked: what it costs to rent moving boxes from heybox, how delivery and pickup work, and our best advice on moving in Copenhagen, from how many boxes you need to what to do with the cardboard afterwards.

About heybox: price, delivery and pickup

Renting moving boxes from heybox costs from 300 kr for 15 boxes – the more boxes, the lower the price per box. The price includes delivery, pickup and 4-7 weeks of rental. For example, 30 boxes cost 540 kr in total. You skip the trip to the hardware store, the hauling and the waste afterwards.

We deliver and pick up across Greater Copenhagen. You just enter your delivery and pickup address when you book, and we take care of the rest.

A good rule of thumb is half a box per square metre plus 5 boxes per person. A 60 m² flat with two people works out to around 40 boxes. If in doubt, pick a few extra - it's easier than running short. For a more precise number, you can work out how many moving boxes you need based on your home and household.

You choose your delivery date and time window when you book: morning (8:00-12:00), afternoon (12:00-17:00) or evening (17:00-21:00), every day of the week. You'll get a text when we're on our way. Kerbside delivery and pickup are free, and you can choose to have us carry the boxes into your home. And once you're settled into your new home, we pick them up again on the pickup date or up to two days later – in the time window you chose.

Yes. By default we leave the boxes at the kerb, but you can choose to have us carry them into your home on delivery and collect them from inside on pickup. Carrying costs 1-3 kr per box each way, depending on how many boxes you rent.

You pay easily via MobilePay at delivery. No hidden fees and no extra costs - the price is the one you see when you order.

Our moving boxes are made of extra-strong cardboard, so they're far stronger and last many more moves than the thin boxes from the hardware store. We deliver and collect them again, so you skip the hauling and the cardboard waste afterwards. We've compared the two in our guide to buying vs. renting moving boxes.

How many moving boxes?

Read the guide

You'll typically need around 35 moving boxes for the rooms themselves in a 70 square metre apartment. On top of this come about 5 boxes per resident for clothes and personal items, so two people land at about 45 boxes. If you have a storage room or basement locker, or are "collectors", you should round up to 50-60 boxes.

A standard 20 cubic metre moving van can hold roughly 100 to 120 full moving boxes. The exact number depends heavily on how many large pieces of furniture also need room in the van, and whether you use professional boxes that can be stacked from floor to ceiling.

It costs from 300 kr for 15 boxes to rent professional, double-layered moving boxes at heybox, and the more boxes you rent, the lower the price per box. The price fully includes both delivery to your current address in Greater Copenhagen and pickup at your new address, so you completely avoid the trip to the hardware store.

A family of two adults and two children most often needs between 60 and 110 moving boxes. The number depends on the home's square metres (how many shared items there are), and whether you have a storage room or a house with an attic or basement. If you're collectors, aim for the high end.

How to pack moving boxes

Read the guide

If you're moving out of a whole flat or house, follow a structured 4-week packing plan to eliminate hassle:

  • T-minus 4 weeks: The basement, attic, seasonal clothes and the bookshelf.
  • T-minus 3 weeks: Decorative items, spare bedding and hobby supplies.
  • T-minus 2 weeks: Office supplies and 80% of the kitchen (keep only 2 pots and basic tableware).
  • T-minus 1 week: Everyday essentials. Pack a dedicated 'survival box' (coffee machine, toilet paper, toothbrush, scissors), which is loaded into the van last and carried in first.

It removes much of the typical moving stress and gives you the energy for moving day itself. If you're moving out of a room or a small flat, the last two steps are usually enough. The rest of the planning – from registering your move to reading the meters – is in our moving checklist.

A moving box should weigh a maximum of between 15 and 20 kilos to spare your back and comply with the Danish Working Environment Authority's recommendations. Even though professional double-wall boxes from heybox can technically carry considerably more weight without breaking, it's crucial that the box can still be lifted safely.

You should always place the heaviest and most solid items such as books, tins, heavy shoes or tools at the bottom of the box. This creates a low centre of gravity that makes the box stable to carry.

Plates should always be wrapped individually in tissue paper and stood on edge (vertically) in the moving box, since the rim is the strongest part. Place a soft layer of crumpled paper at the bottom for shock absorption.

The best moving boxes are made of professional double-wall corrugated cardboard, as they have a high load capacity and can be stacked without the bottom falling out or the box collapsing. You can save money, space and cardboard waste by renting professional moving boxes rather than buying thin single-use boxes at the hardware store.

Moving checklist

You must register your move with the National Register at the earliest four weeks before and no later than five days after the moving date itself. If you miss this deadline, you risk an administrative fine from the municipality. The move is easily registered online at Borger.dk.

You pack a moving box best by placing the heaviest items at the bottom and filling up with lighter items on top. Never exceed 20 kg, and make sure not to overfill the box; it must always be able to close completely flat at the top so it can be stacked easily and safely.

Public systems (the tax authority, Udbetaling Danmark, the region's hospitals) are updated automatically via the CPR register. You do, however, need to contact the following entities yourself:

  • Finance & insurance: Bank (e.g. Danske Bank, Nordea), pension provider and insurance company (crucial for contents insurance cover at your new address).
  • Subscriptions: Telecoms provider, gym (e.g. PureGym, SATS), streaming services and media licences.
  • Other: Employer, dentist, dog register and any trade union / unemployment fund.

Eco-friendly moving

Read the guide

You move in an eco-friendly way by avoiding single-use materials and minimising your resource use. This is done most effectively by renting reusable, sturdy moving boxes instead of buying new ones, using clothes and blankets rather than bubble wrap, and donating things beforehand to reduce the transport weight.

An average move contributes to the estimated 4,450 tonnes of cardboard waste that comes each year from the roughly 20.5 million moving boxes Danes use. The majority of this waste comes from cheap, low-quality cardboard boxes that survive only a single move before being discarded.

You can pack your belongings safely and plastic-free by using old newspapers, blankets, towels and your own clothes to protect fragile items. By rolling glasses up in socks and placing cushions in the bottom of the boxes, you achieve the same protection as with bubble wrap, entirely without burdening the environment.

The benefit of renting moving boxes is that you actively reduce the overproduction of cardboard while also avoiding all the hassle of collecting and disposing of the boxes. When you rent, you get more durable boxes that can be stacked higher and protect your things better, and which are afterwards reused by others.

You can easily rent sustainable and hard-wearing moving boxes from heybox, which offers free kerbside delivery and collection across all of Greater Copenhagen. The service covers everything from Copenhagen K to Vedbæk and completely removes the need to have a car to obtain and get rid of moving boxes.

Buying vs. renting boxes

Read the guide

At heybox you rent 15 boxes from 300 kr, including full delivery and pickup. By comparison, buying new boxes often costs the same or more once you include the expensive driving time in a rented city car.

Yes, the professional boxes from heybox are made of heavy-duty, double-wall corrugated cardboard with a high ECT value. They are much stronger than traditional moving boxes, and you can safely stack them from floor to ceiling.

No, pickup is fully included, so we collect all the empty boxes at your new address (anywhere in Greater Copenhagen). You don't have to dispose of them at all once you've unpacked.

heybox vs. Silvan

Read the guide

It depends on the box: Silvan's Senior box is slightly cheaper in pure material costs, but at heybox delivery and pickup are included in the price. At Silvan, the Senior box costs 16.75 kr and the 7 mm Prof box 36.25 kr each (October 2026), before transport. At heybox, 30 boxes cost 540 kr including delivery and pickup.

Silvan's moving boxes cost from 12.75 kr for a Junior box to 36.25 kr for a 7 mm Prof box (silvan.dk, October 2026). The standard box, Senior, costs 16.75 kr. Delivery costs extra, and you have to get rid of the boxes yourself afterwards.

Silvan's Senior box measures 34 × 37 × 55.6 cm, which is about 70 litres. Junior is smaller (37.7 × 34.1 × 37.5 cm, about 48 litres), and Prof is the largest (37.7 × 38.5 × 67.5 cm, about 98 litres).

The bottom usually collapses because cheap boxes are made of single-wall corrugated cardboard, which lacks the structural strength needed to carry heavy items. To avoid this, choose boxes with a self-locking crash-lock bottom in double-wall cardboard.

Professional double-wall corrugated boxes with a high 'Edge Crush Test' (ECT) value are best, as they allow tall geometric column stacking without risk of collapse. These boxes distribute the weight vertically, so the bottom boxes aren't crushed.

No, professional moving boxes like the ones heybox delivers have a foldable, self-locking crash-lock bottom that completely eliminates the need for tape. You save money on supplies and avoid the hassle of peeling sticky tape off the cardboard afterwards.

Car sharing for your move

Read the guide

GreenMobility typically costs between 4 and 6 kroner per minute, unless you buy a prepaid hour package. The per-minute rate applies from when you unlock the car until you end the trip in an approved parking zone. That means you also pay the full per-minute rate while you're stuck in traffic or while the car is parked outside the DIY store.

Yes, you can rent vans like a Peugeot Boxer or Fiat Ducato from Share Now for a move, but it often takes a 2-hour or 4-hour package to avoid time pressure. Bear in mind that 30 regular cardboard boxes take up a surprising amount of space, even flat-packed, so standard city cars like a Fiat 500 or Peugeot e-208 are rarely big enough.

Freetrailer is free to borrow for the first 3 hours when collected in store, but in practice most people pay a 29 kr. booking fee plus 49 kr. for insurance. If you return the trailer late, you're also charged a hefty 300 kr. penalty, which quickly wipes out the saving.

No, the raw maths shows that car rental, time in traffic and the price of the boxes themselves usually end up costing more than booking an all-in-one logistics solution. You avoid the hassle, the hauling and the trip to the recycling centre by having the moving boxes delivered and picked up instead.

Freetrailer is cheapest on rental alone (typically 49 kr. in fees) but requires a car with a tow bar, while Share Now and GreenMobility typically end up at 150-400 kr. because of city traffic. The real price, though, depends on how much time you lose in traffic and what it costs afterwards to take the cardboard waste to the recycling centre.

Moving boxes by cargo bike

Read the guide

No, it rarely pays to pick up moving boxes on a cargo bike, as 30 flat-packed boxes weigh 15-20 kg and pose a huge safety risk because of the large wind resistance. You risk an unpredictable bike in traffic, and you'll be forced to make many trips back and forth to get enough boxes for a whole move.

You can safely strap down a maximum of 10 to 15 flat-packed moving boxes on a standard cargo bike, depending on the depth of the cargo box and the bike's centre of gravity. If you try to stack more, you go over the edge and lose both your forward visibility and the stability of the steering.

The best way to secure the boxes is to lay them flat against the bottom and cross-strap them tightly over the middle with wide, non-elastic straps. That locks the surface in place, reduces drag from the front and stops a sudden gust from ripping the boxes off the cargo bike halfway across the bridge.

Without a car, you have two options: make several trips to the recycling centre with your cardboard waste, or rent reusable moving boxes that are picked up for you. With heybox, we collect the empty boxes directly from your new address, so you skip the trip entirely. If you've bought cheap cardboard boxes at a DIY store, you're left with the problem yourself afterwards. Then you're forced into yet another wobbly bike ride to take many kilos of cardboard waste to the recycling centre.

Disposing of moving boxes

Read the guide

Large amounts of cardboard can be dropped off free of charge at the City of Copenhagen's (ARC's) recycling centres, for example at Borgervænget, Bispeengen or in Sydhavnen. According to ARC, you just need to make sure the cardboard is free of polystyrene and plastic before it goes in the container.

Cardboard boxes must be flattened, emptied and kept dry before they go in the cardboard bin. The City of Copenhagen encourages you to fold the cardboard and ideally tear it up, so there's room for more in your courtyard's cardboard bin.

No, waste left next to the bins is generally not taken by the waste collectors. This counts as incorrect sorting or "dumped waste", and it can ultimately mean your housing association has to pay for an extra collection.

Yes, you can put cardboard boxes out as bulky waste, but they must be folded and tied tightly together with string. Loose piles of cardboard or boxes packed in black plastic bags will be rejected at the bulky waste collection according to the council's rules.

You avoid cardboard waste entirely by renting reusable, professional moving boxes that are delivered to and collected from your home. With heybox, we collect the empty boxes at your new address once you've finished unpacking, so you skip yet another trip to the recycling centre.
